We are currently fundraising to continue our projects in Puerto Madero, visit our GoFundMe to help provide much needed treatment to strays and pets in this area.
Puerto Madero is a small town in Chiapas, Mexico. We were there completing our major refit on Chuffed for almost 3 years, the refit that we thought would take 3 months… although being on the hard for so long was draining and we faced our fair share of challenges, being in one place for so long allowed us to really concentrate our efforts to make real change for animal health in the region.
When we first arrived in Puerto Madero we were treating cases as we discovered them, working to help street dogs that were injured or unwell. One such patient was Blanquito, he had been hit by a car and was left with partial paralysis of his hindlimbs. One of the women in a small tienda asked us if we could help him, so every day we would track him down, give him his medicine, do physiotherapy and ensure he was being well fed. At first Blanquito would growl when he saw me coming, then after a few days he would give a little tail wag but was still frightened… with in a week he was living permanently at the tienda with a new owner and a BIG smile every time I walked around the corner with his medicine! Blanquito still lives a ‘free dog’ life, but spends most of his days laying under a table of bananas, well fed, bathed and cared for. He can walk, albeit with a slightly crab like gait, and is one of the happiest dogs around!
Although Blanquito’s story is so special, we realized that treating individual animals only helps one dog… we needed to do something to reduce the number of stray animals on the street and make real change for Puerto Madero. Working with the local veterinarian, Dra. Brenda, and a regional veterinary team lead by Dr. Baroquel, we facilitated and funded the first ever Spay and Neuter Campaign for this region. Although we are no longer in Puerto Madero, these campaigns have become a regular occurrence thanks to the funding from our donators and the continued hard work of Dra. Brenda and the team. These campaigns have so far provided surgery for over 300 animals, and we plan to fund these as often as possible, your donations go directly towards helping continue this important project!
We also worked closely with a veterinary student, Jeni, while we were in Puerto Madero. Jeni helped us set up multiple vaccinations campaigns in the region, with more than 200 dogs receiving vaccines to protect them from rabies, parvovirus and distemper. Dra. Jeni has since graduated from veterinary school and is continuing to provide low cost treatments to animals in need in her community. We are so proud of her for continuing the Vet Tails mission to improve animal health and welfare, and we provide ongoing funding to make this work possible.
